Name (as it appears in Brendan’s Irish passport)
Bréanainn Ó Séaghdha

Brendan has jet-black, shoulder-length hair kept in a neat ponytail; Though lately having been magically de-aged, he’s changed his hairstyle somewhat. Penetrating green eyes, formerly behind stylishly thin wire-frame glasses that he has since dispensed with for now. Although he always has his Garda-issue Sig Sauer P226 on his person in a concealment holster, Brendan still fondly carries his police baton from his early days as a foot patrol Garda and later motorcycle Garda…for sentimental and symbolic reasons, he claims. As a somewhat senior plainclothes investigator, he is allowed some leeway with his manner of dress and appearance; this is especially necessary for any undercover work. Brendan’s superiors know his exemplary service record and give him a pass on his currently more lax and fashionable look.

Brendan speaks English with an Irish accent, but is also fluent in modern Irish Gaelic and Old Irish (including the ability to read in the Ogham alphabet it is written in). Brendan also speaks French fluently (working part of the year in Lyon, France at Interpol HQ), as well as Latin (from a solid Jesuit education at the primary and secondary level); He also learned to speak Russian and German fluently out of a keen interest in European politics and history from a tender age.

Brendan holds the rank of Inspector in An Garda Síochána na hÉireann and is a fully licensed agent of Interpol.

Bio:

Native of Dublin, Ireland. Born 1975 to a widowed mother, a librarian at Trinity College Dublin. Brendan was always told his father had been an IRA man in Ulster and had been killed in The Troubles by N.I. (Protestant) paramilitary forces. Brendan received a solid Jesuit education from primary school through secondary school.

Brendan did serve in the Irish Defence Forces (Parachute Infantry), specifically the Army Ranger Wing (ARW, Irish: Sciathán Fianóglach an Airm ) for a few years after High School, and there are rumors that during his military service he was assigned to G2 (Irish military intelligence) but Brendan has always denied this (but then, wouldn’t a spook always deny it?). As an Irish soldier, Brendan served on UN peacekeeping missions in Africa and Asia, where he was commended for bravery under fire.

With his brief but exemplary military service and solid Jesuit secondary education (honors student at that) he was awarded full scholarships to attend university. Maintaining his status as an honors student, he earned his undergraduate degree in history and chemical engineering at University College Cork. Returning to his native Dublin, he next pursued advanced degree(s) from Trinity College Dublin, then later attended the prestigious London School of Economics.
Of his London years, Brendan speaks cryptically of a visiting Professor at LSE, a fellow Irishman, who mentored him “like a father” and “truly opened my eyes to how the world really is”.
Brendan refuses to name this enigmatic figure, saying only with a wink that he was “Truly a Great Man of Letters.”

After thus completing his university undergraduate and graduate education (Sociology, International Relations, Chemical Engineering, and Intellectual History), Brendan rose to rank of Inspector in An Garda Síochána na hÉireann, working homicide/fraud investigation, counter-terrorism, etc.

Brendan seems to friends and colleagues alike a bundle of walking contradictions, hard to pigeon hole exactly. Though definitely cerebral and academic, he also enjoyed playing rugby in school, and has always been keen on martial arts training. He also has a good ear for music and languages, having learned to play Irish fiddle at the age of ten, which he continues to practice to the present day. Though his fellow Gardai are glad to have him as a colleague, many are frankly mystified by Brendan’s choice of career and don’t understand why he isn’t writing books and working as a university professor abroad somewhere or even in Ireland.

Bredan also served with distinction in the Garda detachment sent to Kosovo as part of the UN peacekeeping mission there in 1999, with Brendan serving from 2002-2004. The majority of Brendan’s service in Garda has naturally been within the borders of the Republic of Ireland, however, mainly in the Dublin Metropolitan Area. Brendan served with the prestigious Emergency Response Unit (ERU) of the Armed Gardaí, equivalent to American SWAT teams.

Though he considers himself an ardent Irish patriot, and openly supports Sinn Féin, he admits he no longer considers himself a Catholic and is much more interested in the pagan Celtic traditions of Ireland’s ancient past. Brendan is pessimistic about Irish reunification and feels the only chance of occurring is if Ireland becomes completely secular or completely reverts to its pagan, pre-Christian roots.

“I’m a small ‘r’ republican, but I’m not an Irish Republican™ insofar as I don’t consider myself Catholic and I think the Catholic partisanship of formal Irish Republicanism undermines true republican values which are secular and non-sectarian by necessity.”, explains O’Shea.

Shortly after earning the Garda rank of Inspector in 2008, he was nominated to be one of Ireland’s personnel contributions to Interpol, the international police organisation headquartered in Lyon, France.

Brendan is currently posted to Interpol, spending part of each year in Lyon, France (HQ of Interpol), the rest of the year in Dublin (HQ of An Garda Síochána na hÉireann ). Enjoys playing Irish fiddle in pubs on weekends. Fan of the rock bands Black ’47 and the Dropkick Murphys.
Brendan is generally easygoing and friendly, though at times he can be moody, laconic, and distant, seemingly lost in thought.

Then came the day when one of his Interpol cases became unexpectedly active and a new lead necessitated a trip to Las Vegas, in the western United States…

Although a Law Enforcement officer like his fellow Scion Deputy Nate Prichert, Brendan is seemingly less “by the books” than Nate in his philosophy. With his Counter-terrorism experience in the Emergency Response Unit, he is also aware of National Security concerns and objectives that sometimes override certain legal niceties. When it comes to the hidden realm of Scions and Gods, a lot of the black and white laws of the human realm fade to a hazy gray in Brendan’s reckoning. He views the conflict of the Gods as open warfare where normal human rules simply don’t apply, or at least don’t lend themselves to simple application.

Brendan decided he should keep a journal of his travels in North America and wherever else his missions may take him; It can be read here.

Brendan came to realise that the only woman who would ever understand him was the one who had been at his side for most of his adult life; Namely his loyal sprite, Aisling. However, it was going to take some divine intervention for their relationship to be able to move forward. As Brendan approached Demigod-hood, he decided to pray to Ogma to bless their union and make it feasible. Ogma took pity on this seemingly mismatched pair and found a way to unite them.

Brendan O’Shea recently experienced a chaotic time distortion and was physically de-aged by 10 years and now has the physique and maturity of a spry 26 year old male. He now bears a striking resemblance to comedian Dylan Moran as a result.

Brendan recently helped defeat Canopus a 2nd time in gratifying fashion. In the incident report he filled out (in Gaelic, being a wise-arse) he indicated he “went all St. Patrick on his ass.”.
