So, here’s what you as Scions know…
Back in the before-time, there were the Titans: Great primordial entities without thought, emotion or a consciousness as we understand it. Their very existence played havoc with creation, but out of that chaos were born titan-spawn; creatures of more pointed characteristics, able to better define the jagged edges of creation.
Time passed, and some of the titan-spawn saw that the whole of creation was without a design. Having been born with the ability to engineer, they took it upon themselves to lay out a plan to everything. These engineering entities became known as the gods. The gods mined out a piece of divine real estate for their own and thus the god-realms were created.
It was in this time that gods developed egos which surpassed their abilities, if only just slightly, and it was in this time that some chose to renege on their alliance. These titanspawn, as all children of titans are called, broke their ties with the gods and retreated back to the titans. With them they took knowledge and experience and with these they became avatars of the titans. Thus were they better able to direct the destructive tendencies of their vast parents and grandparents.
On the other side of the coin, the gods who’d remained then created the world and everything in it, including humans. It was only natural that when faced with such power among us that we would be awed and create religion with which to worship our creators. Unfortunately even then, humans were, and still are, a very fragile race. The demise of each worshiping soul made more apparent the need for a place for their souls to reside, and so the underworlds were created.
The titans and their avatars raged against the Gods’ design and threatened to end it; and with it humanity. So the gods, being merciful (or perhaps just possessive), formulated a plan to rid themselves of the titans. But how best to do away with that which fueled all creation? It was decided that the caverns of the underworlds would form the foundation of the prison that would hold the titans. It was there among the dead that Tartarus, the greatest gulag ever known, was created. In it, with no small effort, the gods contained the titans and sealed it, hopefully forever. They left only two greater titans free of this imprisonment; Zrvan the inapprehensible titan of Time, and Logos the greater titan of Order, who saw the logic and the reason behind the gods’ plans and assisted in the creation of Tartarus.
This is a tale long written and in many ways echoed in the annals of time and verse. For the longest time there was a golden age upon the world. The gods lived among us and there was resplendence throughout the earth. But as time passed (and Zrvan’s freedom saw to that) the fates of the gods began to become entangled in those of their mortal followers. The gods became fearful that they would someday be undone by their creations, just as their predecessors were undone. They retreated to their celestial abodes and resolved to dabble only sparingly in the world of mortals, visiting only when they longed to take a hand directly in its course. These events heralded the modern age as we know it.
Then came a dark shadow upon the earth in the years we have come to refer as World War II. The gods took an interest too intimate in the course of mortal affairs. Many of them were drawn into the conflict (and not all to the same side) and in their desire to come out ahead of one another, delved all too readily (and greedily) back into the walls of Tartarus. The lords of the underworld drew back the great prison’s seal and retrieved what they thought were mindless warriors to enlist in the warfare of the mortal realm. But merely by opening the prison bars, they weakened the integrity of Tartarus and in the ensuing years its inhabitants flexed against their prison until it shattered.
In 1960 our world shook with a 9.5 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Valdivia, Chili. This earthquake was but a shadow of what happened in the underworlds. Tartarus erupted, releasing the titans back into the universe. The gulag had changed them, tempered their purpose. Where before the titanic avatars were petty at best they were now furious; and where before they were chaotic and often worked against each other, they now have formed a united front with the intent and purpose of waging war against the gods. They lay siege to the celestial realms, cutting off much of the contact and travel with our world that the gods once had.
Knowing that if the celestial realms fall, then the titans will turn their might on a defenseless Earth, the gods began once more to walk among us. At the behest of the love gods an unprecedented movement of goodwill, peace and “free-love” was engendered throughout humanity. This was, in fact, an attempt to sow the seeds of Scions who might grow strong and one day be soldiers in the war against the titans. Although the age of free love has mellowed, the gods yet walk among us, siring children with which to bolster their ranks against the titans.
It is with this knowledge, and certain relics, that your parents have left you. They understand that not everyone may wield a sword in the coming war but they hope that with the divine gifts that they bestow upon their Scions, those children who are more free of fate than themselves may once again find a way to imprison the titans.
